How to Search Butler Court Dockets
Open MyCase first. Pick “DeKalb County - Butler City Court” from the Court dropdown whenever the notice names that court. On the Case tab, search by cause number or citation number, but fill only one identifier field. No number in hand? Use the Name tab instead. Enter a last name before any first name or birth date. Never mix a business search with person-name fields. Open a likely result. Check the 17H01 court identifier, the case type, the file date, the status, the parties, the Events/CCS, and the newest hearing. If nothing turns up, call Butler City Court at (260) 868-2441. A county-level case belongs under a DeKalb County search instead. Remember that MyCase is only a reference display. The court or clerk holds the official record.
- Read the court, cause number, UTT, and date on the notice.
- Select Butler City Court in MyCase.
- Search one number field or a party name.
- Review the newest case and hearing events.
- Confirm the date, balance, or copy request with the named court.
Butler City Court Contact
Across DeKalb County, Butler is the one place with a separately listed city court in the current Indiana directory and Odyssey list. The official Butler elected-officials page names Judge Richard Obendorf, explains the judge's role in traffic disputes, and lists the court's contact details.

You will find Butler City Court at 217 South Broadway. Its public line is (260) 868-2441. City Hall sits next door at 215 South Broadway, yet the two buildings do different jobs. Bring docket, hearing, citation, or city-court payment questions to the court. City Hall handles municipal administration.
The Butler Municipal Court Docket
Indiana's official name for the local venue is Butler City Court. It has its own MyCase listing. Because of that, a Butler court docket search does not drown in county results. The court takes on traffic disputes and the fines the official city page describes. Still, let the citation and current case header control. Not every event inside Butler's city limits falls under city-court authority. The public Chronological Case Summary can show the cause number, court, filing date, case type, status, parties, events, hearings, allowed documents, and financial data. A payment page shows none of that history. Search MyCase before paying. Read the final disposition rather than treating a Closed status as the result.
Butler H01 Docket Numbers
Odyssey tags Butler City Court with the 17H01 identifier. Take a number like 17H01-YYMM-IF-######: it points to DeKalb County, the H-family city court, the filing year and month, the case type, and the filing sequence. MyCase sometimes tolerates missing hyphens or leading zeroes, but the complete printed number remains the safest starting point.
- Cause number
- The court's case identifier.
- UTT
- The Uniform Traffic Ticket or citation number.
- IF
- An infraction case code.
- OV
- An ordinance-violation case code.
- CCS
- The dated register of court events.
In MyCase, enter either the cause number or the UTT, never both. The portal rejects multiple number fields with a validation message.
Butler Court Dates and Settings
Your Butler court date appears in the citation instructions and in MyCase hearing events. Always read the newest session. A reset, continuance, or cancellation can leave an older date sitting in the CCS. The case's overall status will not catch that. When a setting is close, call the City Court and confirm the time and place.
| Date | The current date in the newest hearing or scheduling event. |
|---|---|
| Time | The session start time and any separate arrival direction. |
| Courtroom | Butler City Court at 217 South Broadway unless the court directs otherwise. |
| Judge | The judicial officer shown on the setting, when public. |
| Setting Type | Initial appearance, traffic dispute, pretrial, trial, or compliance event. |
A PayGov receipt does not cancel a hearing on its own. After any payment or plea step, check the CCS or call the court.
Butler Court E-Filing Rules
The Indiana electronic filing rules set out how eligible documents are filed and served in state courts.

E-filing is not the Butler court docket viewer. It exists for filers; MyCase exists for public case research. Acceptance by an e-filing provider does not make a document public. Access Rules 4 and 5 still decide availability. The local court remains the source for a certified record. Butler offers no official online plea or generic local course option. So follow the citation and City Court instructions rather than borrowing a process from another Indiana court.
Butler Traffic Court Records
Butler City Court hears traffic disputes and collects the fines that follow. Begin any Butler citation search with the named court, the UTT, the cause number, and the appearance date printed on the ticket. Then choose Butler City Court in MyCase. If nothing appears, call (260) 868-2441. Do not assume the ticket belongs to the county traffic division. Paying and contesting are separate paths. A payment may resolve an amount under the court's instructions. A contest means following the appearance or plea process. No single deadline covers every DeKalb citation, so the printed citation controls. The DeKalb County traffic court records page covers county cases. When the citation names Butler City Court, Butler's own route applies.
Butler PayGov Docket Fields
Butler PayGov transaction 11031 requests a name, date of birth, cause number, UTT, phone, address, driver's-license data, and payment fields. Those inputs apply a payment. They neither search nor display the court docket. Confirm the identifiers match the Butler case in MyCase first.
| Field | Purpose | Check before entry |
|---|---|---|
| Cause number | Links payment to the court case | Look for 17H01 |
| UTT | Identifies the traffic citation | Copy the printed number |
| Name and DOB | Matches the payer and case | Use citation details |
| Payment data | Funds the transaction | Confirm amount with court |
PayGov adds its own service fee on top of what the court charges. The payment screen proves neither a canceled hearing nor a zero balance, so verify posting directly with Butler City Court.
Where Butler Court Cases End Up
Not every Butler case stays in Butler. City Court handles only the matters within its authority. Infractions charged at the county level outside the Butler route land in DeKalb Superior Court II, and moving county ordinance cases go to Superior Court I. Suits, felonies, probate, family, and juvenile matters follow the DeKalb allocation plan too. The facts may have started in Butler, but the case still belongs wherever that plan places it.
Docket flow: Butler City Court › DeKalb County Courts › DeKalb Circuit Court
Check the notice for the court that issued it. A case number beginning with 17C01, 17D01, or 17D02 instead of 17H01 means something. You should pick DeKalb County in MyCase. The DeKalb County court docket overview maps those county divisions. An appeal, meanwhile, opens a separate appellate record rather than stretching the Butler CCS.
Butler Appeals and Federal Dockets
A Butler City Court or DeKalb County case will never surface in a federal records system, so searching one there wastes time and fees. The PACER fee explanation covers federal court charges only, with nothing to do with Butler City Court.

Keeping the systems straight stops a local citation lookup from drifting into the wrong database. DeKalb federal matters sit in the Northern District of Indiana. Butler City Court records stay in Indiana Odyssey with the local court. The federal appellate layer for this region is the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals website.

Ordinary Butler City Court appeals do not land here. Indiana state appeals move through the Indiana appellate system instead. So before you jump from a Butler docket to an appeal search, pin down which court family the case sits in.
Public Access to Butler Court Records
Indiana Access Rule 4 opens most court records to the public. Another rule or law can exclude some of them. Rule 5 then steps in for what stays closed: sealed cases, juvenile material, mental-health matters, confidential attachments, investigative requests, and similar restricted content. One withheld event document can hide inside an otherwise visible Butler case. MyCase also cautions that its display may omit material and is not the official record.
Key Rules:
Indiana Access Rule 4 states the general public-access rule.
Indiana Access Rule 5 lists excluded court-record categories.
Indiana Access Rule 9 provides an extraordinary verified-request process.
Butler City Court answers for its own records. County cases are different; the DeKalb County Clerk of the Circuit Court issues the official copies. A file missing online might simply live in person, sit too far back for remote display, or be confidential.
Butler Dockets Versus Other Archives
Broad legal archives can turn up published opinions, but none of them is the official Butler docket. CourtListener is one such research archive, and its scope differs entirely from MyCase.

A Butler traffic ticket starts with MyCase and City Court. A published-opinion archive helps only in one situation. The case must have reached a court that issued a public opinion. Even then, take the trial case back to the official Indiana system and verify it there.
Butler posted a 2020 Census population of 2,635, third among DeKalb County incorporated places. Small town, same rules. Cause numbers, access limits, settings, and payment instructions still control every case on the docket.
Request a copy from Butler City Court by naming the cause number. Give the exact order or event date too. Say whether you need a plain or certified copy. What you print from MyCase is not certified on its own. A payment receipt is not the CCS or final disposition either.
Butler Court Record Fallbacks
Keep a Butler lookup inside Butler City Court whenever the notice names that venue or shows 17H01. No result? Check the UTT, the cause-number padding, the filing range, the status, and the party spelling. Call Butler City Court before you push a Butler citation into a county payment route.
Some Butler matters move past city court. A later county case may carry 17C01, 17D01, or 17D02. A state appeal gets its own appellate record. The Butler PayGov screen cannot find those dockets. Go back to MyCase and pick the court now listed. Then follow the Butler case through its current Events/CCS list.
Butler City Court joined Odyssey in 2022. Older entries may appear as a Converted Event with no linked PDF. That label just marks imported data, not a new Butler hearing or charge. Ask Butler City Court for an older city-court document. Ask the DeKalb clerk when the header points to a county court.
A copy request should list the cause number, party names, event, and date. Note whether the Butler record must be certified. A printout from MyCase is not a certified copy, and a PayGov receipt is not the final disposition. The proper court confirms both the record and the current financial status.
Restricted Butler material follows Indiana access rules. A missing name result can reflect sealing, confidentiality, or another limit. Check your search fields first. Then ask the proper Butler or county clerk for the authorized record channel rather than trying to get around the restriction.
Butler Court Search Check
Before trusting a Butler result, line up the cause number, the Butler City Court name, the party, the filing date, and the latest hearing event. For payment, match the UTT and amount to the court's instructions. Then confirm the transaction actually posted.
